Thank you, America!
“I will become an Okinawan Shisa!”

Mr. Tatsuro Kinjo strongly emphasized this in a speech from an election car on the 11th of November, which was the public notification day for the upcoming election of the Governor of Okinawa prefecture in Japan. Mr. Tatsuro Kinjo is one of the candidates for that position. He is a representative of Okinawa prefectural headquarters agency of the Happiness Realization Party. He stated that “I will become an Okinawan Shiisa and protect the people!” A “Shiisa” is a popular lion-shaped roof ornament in Okinawa that helps protect people’s houses from invaders. He stated that a “Shiisa protects families from strangers attacking them, but is friendly to proper guests. In a similar manner I intend to protect Okinawa from being attacked but welcome guests from other countries that come to Okinawa as friends”.

It is true that Mr.Kinjo has a similar demeanor to a Shiisa. Mr. Kinjo can be considered to be a rather strange man here in Okinawa. All the other candidates avoid speaking about anything related to the Senkaku Islands issue. He is the only one that is prepared to state his opinion on that issue, the threat posed by China, and the safety of Okinawa.

Mr.Masahiro Nakaima is currently holds the position of being the Governor of Okinawa prefecture. He won the last election with a manifesto insisting that the relocation of the American military base in Futenma take place as quickly as possible. However, he is now stating that the American military base should be completely removed from Okinawa. After a number of Democratic Party candidates won positions using a manifesto that was anti the relocation of the Futenma base plan in the general election held last year in Japan Mr. Nakaima then changed his manifesto. For the upcoming election the quarters of the Loberal Democratic Party of Japan would appear to be not supporting Mr.Nakaima, because his manifesto is anti the Futenma relocation plan.

Mr. Yoichi Iha is also a candidate, who is supported by both the Japan Communist Party(JCP) and the Social Democratic Party of Japan. His manifesto is more extreme with regard to the issue of the American Military removing themselves from Okinawa and instead being moved to Guam. His message on the official website states that the “Futenma base is your neighbor and hence I need your help to remove it”. A person living in Naha that listened to a speech made by Mr.Iha said that “Mr.Iha’s opinion would appear to be that all the reasons for the economic problems etc. stem from the existence of the American Military in Okinawa. He is basically saying that if the American military were to be removed from Okinawa everything would then turn out rosy, and that not only Okinawa but also the other prefectures should bear the burden. He questioned why only Okinawa should have to suffer the issue”.

Mr.Tatsuro Kinjo states in his manifesto that the Futenma base should be relocated somewhere in Okinawa, the Japan-America alliance strengthened, and a Self Defense Force sent to the Senkaku Islands to strengthen the safety of the border. His opinion is that Okinawa is situated in a geopolitically important area and hence it is very necessary to have Military Force here in Okinawa in maintaining the peace and safety of Asia. I questioned him the fact that “Almost all the people living in Okinawa are peace loving and dislike the Military. Your opinion would therefore appear to very much go against the thinking of the people of Okinawa. You are saying that the American Military is needed in Okinawa, so presumably the people there won’t vote for you”.

He replied that “I appreciate what America is doing. America sends its young people here to help maintain the peace of Japan and Asia. I would actually like thank America. It is a difficult thing to send your own people abroad to ensure the safety of other countries that are far away from their own country. I think we should appreciate them for that. Naturally we should also have our own Military to protect our own country by ourselves someday, but with the current situation, we have to depend on the American Military. I merely want to protect Okinawa. I want to change people’s mindset while still feeling strongly about the need for peace, and hence don’t really care whether I win the election or not. I will continue to follow my manifesto for the people in Okinawa because I love the people that live there”.

A red hot election has just started in Okinawa. Which direction do you think the people will take in selecting what could ultimately affect the future of Asia.
